One Month After Closing

Posted by gremlynn on April 28, 2016 at 11:05 PM Comments comments (0)

Wow!  It's hard to believe that the shop has been closed for a month already!  Driving by the store front, it is now occupied by the new tennant, their sign is up and it's almost like we never existed.  There is no sign of us ever having been there. Very humbling, indeed. The only thing certain in life is change, I've been told.

What have I accomplished this 1st month of my "next chapter"?  Well, it took a week to tie up loose ends with landlord, utilities, POS machine, Revenue Canada and the accountant.  We also took inventory, to see where we were.  As it happens, we were able to sell 94% of our inventory in the two months it took us to close out.  It's no wonder we were so very tired!  I took in the Central Alberta Quilt show on the 2nd of April and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Then, on the 3rd, I woke up sick.  And I mean SICK!  I have never felt so poorly in my entire life!  Visited the clinic twice that week only to discover that I had a virus that could take months to run its course.  Honestly?!  Really?!  After running the business and working the hours I did, for almost 5 years and maybe getting a cold one Christmas break, I am now dealing with a Virus.  Really?!  So, the next two weeks were spent trying to keep it together ~ our trip to the Island had to be cancelled ~ and I began to putter in my much neglected sewing room for as long as I could each day.  Two weeks pass and I was feeling better.  But, being me, I over do it and had to regroup for another week.  Guess Mother Nature is telling me that I really need to relax and learn to "go with it".  Okay.  I am listening.  Into week 3 of the virus and week 4 of post shop closing, I think I am doing okay.  My energy is up.  We now have our steers and they are settling in nicely.  I am cooking again ~ an activity that I have truly missed.  And I am puttering in the many flower beds on our property.  And today, I sewed!  Nothing fancy, just making up some rag quilt 6" squares.  But, I took time to sew.  And it was lovely.

As I ponder my next adventure, the message I guess I am taking here is to take it slowly.  It was 5, very intense years and I guess I was more tired than I realized I was.  But all is good.  Things are moving forward in a positive way and I am taking that much needed break.  Will keep you posted as things progress.  :)

Until next time,

May all your seams be straight!

Lynn

Store is Closed

Wow! What an amazing journey it has been. A HUGE Thank You to ALL of you wonderful customers who came along for the ride these past almost 5 years. Thank you for your continuing support, your well wishes, your hugs and all the laughs and memories made. YOU have inspired me to step outside my comfort zone and to create something that I have always wanted to do. If it wasn't for you all and your support, Prairie Points Quilt Shop never could have existed. It is one thing to have the dream, but another entirely to have the dream come to life and to thrive.

Today was our final day and we have closed the shop's doors for the last time tonight at 5:30. Although there will no longer be a physical store, there are plans in the works. This page will soon have a new name and a new focus, but the link and address won't change. As we take a few months to regroup, there will continue to be our Sunday Morning Videos and as we work out our next chapter, there will be step by step pictorals and photos of projects in the works.

It has been a lot of fun and we are blessed for having had the experience.

Sew, until next time, may all your seams be straight,

Lynn

New Beginnings

Greetings Fellow Quilters and Fabric Artists:

March 26th, 2016 at 5:30 pm, marks the end of an era for out physical store in Ponoka, AB.

As it happens, our lease was up for renewal in 2016. The mall's newest tennant  wanted into our spot, to give them a full 9000 square feet of rental space.  As we had no desire to move and needed to do so to renew our lease, we decided to liquidate and shut down our shop. The actual thought of relocating, changing services, redoing business cards, google maps, etc., was absolutely more than I could bear at this time!

I have thoroughly enjoyed this 5 year chapter of my life, but since being given the opportunity to make a serious change, I have embraced it for what it is ~ an opportunity to make some changes.  Although I will no longer have a bricks and mortar retail store with retail hours and all that goes with it, I am still very much in love with the whole quilting industry.  I have no thoughts of completely walking away from it.  What this change will allow my to do is to spend more time with my husband, kids and grandbuddies, to pursue building my longarm quilting skill set, pursue my pattern drafting passion, sew for pleasure and have an actual social life again.

Sew, as promised to those who have visited the shop during these final two months as we liquidated, I am not going away.  My plan is to take 6-9 months off to rebuild my health, re-group, re-coup and re-charge.  At this point, I will be ready to reveal my next chapter with you.

With that and for now, this website and our facebook page will be undergoing some major changes within the coming months.  I will be maintaining the www.facebook.com/PPQSPONOKA page where you get a day to day buzz of projects, The Sunday Morning YouTube videos you have been following and more of my home life. There will no longer be a physical store, but my hope is to entertain and to enlighten you as we proceed with the metamorphisis of this business of mine.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time of transition.

Until next time, may all your seams be straight!

March 2016 Edition

Greetings Fellow Quilters and Fabric Artists:

Since last month’s announcement of the closing of our shop, we cannot begin to express our gratitude and sincerest thanks with your continuing support, well wishes, hugs, concerns, and treats. All is well. As I stated in February’s letter, the decision was not easy, but since we have to move, we felt that this was for the best. 

Our Closing Out Sale will now continue with 45% Off All Remaining Inventory! The 1.0 meter minimum cut is still in effect on all bolted fabrics and only the existing PQs & kits are available. We still have a great selection of inventory left, so this is the time to get some great bargains of top quality quilting cottons, notions, books, patterns, sample quilts, and so on. Also, when you finish any bolt of fabric, you will get 50% off that bolt! We will be OPEN on Good Friday the 25th, to allow those travelling a chance to stop by. We will be closing the doors for the last time at 5:30, on March 26th.

We want to sell most of our fixtures as well. Our shelving is the perfect size for fabric bolts since they were custom made to accommodate them! The large ones can be easily converted to become a book case by adding 2 more shelves. Many of the stand-alone wooden fixtures are now sold, but we still have a few interesting pieces left. Go to: www.facebook.com/PPQSPONOKA to see photos of what is still available. 

I will be keeping my Facebook Page open and my Contact lists. I will keep you all in the loop with regards to our next chapter, in the coming months. My plan is to take at least 6 months off to re-group, re-coup and re-charge before we make the announcement of what we are planning to do for our next adventure. Also this will be the final newsletter that I will send out until we make our announcement later this fall/early winter ~ I didn’t want to bore you all to tears with tales of my chickens, steers and garden happenings! Continue to follow the Face Book page as I will continue to post the Sunday Morning Video and any projects that I will be working on in these next few months. I thank you all for patience & understanding during this time of transition.

Until next time, may all your seams be straight!

February 2016 Edition

Greetings Fellow Quilters and Fabric Artists:

This month’s newsletter is the marking the end of an era for us. With much deliberation and careful consideration, we have decided to close our quilt shop in Ponoka, AB. It has been just under 5 years since we embarked on this whirl-wind journey. I have learned the value of good employees, loyal and wonderful customers and to accept feedback from others. I am blessed to have had this experience and honored that you all have supported us as you have. I have a much deeper respect for those who embark on the self-employment path ~ it is not easy to wear so many hats and still appear to have it all under control on a day to day basis! 

As it happens, our lease is up and our landlord needs to move us from our current stall in this strip mall, to another space within the mall. He has another tenant who is taking over a full half of this mall and this will include my space. Since we have decided against relocating, we have decided to liquidate the entire inventory to allow me to better plan for my next adventure. I have enjoyed getting to know you all and am still madly in love with the whole quilting industry, so rest assured that I won’t be giving it up any time soon. My hope is to pursue my quilting and pattern designing passions as well as hone my long arm quilting skills. We are also considering several other very interesting options at this time that we will share information with you, as we are able to. Cool things are soon on the horizon so stay tuned! 

With that being said, we will begin our Closing Out Sale on February 2nd with 35% Off All Merchandise!!! There will be a One Meter minimum cut in effect for all bolted fabrics. No new quarters or kits will be made up as we liquidate. And, if you finish a bolt, you get 40% off the whole piece!! 

I will be keeping my Facebook Page open and my Contact lists and will keep you all in the loop with regards to our next chapter, in the coming months. I thank you all in advance for your patience & understanding during this time of transition for us.

Congratulations to Lynn K-J, the winner of the Ugly Quilt Contest and a $229.99 Stella lamp! We had sew much fun with this that we have decided to give all participants a prize for playing!

Until next time, may all your seams be straight!

Pre Washing your fabric

Posted by gremlynn on August 6, 2012 at 3:30 PM Comments comments (0)

Retayne is used to set dye. For example, if you printed a text message on fabric, you can use Retayne to to set it. If you have a piece of fabric you know will fade, you can use Retayne to keep fading to a minimum.

Apply Retayne only once on commercially dyed fabric before washing it for the first time, or before piecing it into your quilt. Choose one of the two easy application methods, washing machine or hand wash. Remember to always test your fabric before washing it by following the instructions below.

When to use Retayne

Test your fabric before treating it with Retayne.

1. Dampen a small square of 100% cotton white muslin.

2. Place it on top of the colored fabric to be tested.

3. Iron the fabrics with a hot iron until dry.

4. Inspect the muslin. If there is any transfer of color, then treat your fabric with Retayne.

How to use Retayne

In the washing machine

(Please note: The new energy efficient front and top loading washing machines do not supply enough water to properly treat your fabrics with Retayne. You will need to use the Hand Wash Method below or a traditional top loader in your Laundromat)

1. Estimate the amount of water needed to cover your fabric. Fill your

washing machine to this level with 140oF (60oC) water. Boil water on the stove and add it to the washing machine if your hot tap water is not hot enough.

2. Add 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of Retayne for each yard of fabric.

3. Add dry cotton fabric. Set the washing machine for a 20 minute wash cycle. If necessary, reset your machine during the cycle so the Retayne bath does not go down the drain. Rinse with cold water and dry at once.

By hand washing

1. Use an old enamel canning kettle that is not used for food preparation and heat the water to 140oF (60oC). The quantity of water must completely cover the cloth and allow it to move around freely.

2. Add 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of Retayne for each yard of fabric.

3. Add dry fabric. Swish your fabric around in the hot Retayne bath for 20 minutes with a spoon or wooden dowel. After 20 minutes, rinse with cold water and dry at once.

4.You only need to treat your fabric once with Retayne.Launder it in cool water with a cold rinse from then on. Do not wash it in hot water.

How to care for fabric treated with Retayne

Launder treated fabric in warm water with a cold rinse.Do not wash it in hot water.

Please note: The new energy efficient front and top loading washing machines do not supply enough water to properly treat your fabrics with Retayne. You will need to use the Hand Wash Method below or a traditional top loader in your local Laundromat.

August 2012 Edition

Greetings Fellow Quilters and Fabric Artists:

Happy 1st Birthday PPQS! Where has the time gone? A crazy year it has been, indeed. Thank you all for welcoming us into your quilting world. We couldn’t do this without your ongoing support. :o)

Summer is half over and the seasonal fabric has begun to arrive. Take a break from the heat and spend the afternoon “chillin’” in your sewing room. Stop by and check out our “Dress It Up” novelty buttons, to add embellishments to your wall hangings, table runners and placemats.

We also have in the 2012 Quilter’s Travel Companion in for those of you doing road trips this summer. I keep mine in “the bus” [my Durango] so it is always handy to check out where those quilt shops are “hiding” when Don & I get a chance to hit the road to do our own tours. This comprehensive book covers from Alaska/Yukon all the way down to Texas and everything in between! I have been a huge fan of this travel guide for years now and am happy to have my little shop listed in it. A great bargain for $19.95 [the same $ in the US] and it’s good for 2 years!

Our “monthly events” may have to change with the recent sale of the restaurant [next door]. I haven’t had a chance to speak with the new owner yet regarding our using his lounge space as we previously have. And so, I guess; only time will tell. Will keep you posted, when I know more . . . .

I am sorry to have to announce that we are cancelling the Quilt Shop Mystery Bus Tour. Two of the four participating shops were having difficulty filling their bus, so it was decided to not run it. I will be contacting those of you who did sign up and arrange a refund or store credit for you. We are disappointed that we won’t be doing it this year, but perhaps we will have better luck next year, should we decide to try again.

But, we are happy to announce that we have been having a busy summer here at PPQS. We have had so many visitors from all over, including Hawaii, Ontario, Vancouver Island, Illinois and all over Alberta. It is wonderful to see you all – thank you for including us in your summer travels, bringing in your “sew and tell” and getting us to help you with your quilting questions and issues. We are here to help and are always very happy to do so!

Happy Quilting,

Lynn Burdett

PPQS July Newsletter

July 2012 Edition

Greetings Fellow Quilters and Fabric Artists:

Happy Canada Day! I hope all of you are enjoying the lovely summer weather – it is so nice to feel warm again!

We enjoyed Stampede week here at the shop. We watched the parade Friday and have posted highlight photos on our Facebook page. Don & I took in the chucks Sat. night and thoroughly enjoyed our evening with old friends.

Laurel and I have been busy in the shop. We have started a $3/prairie quarter and a $10/pre-cut meter bin of some of the fabrics approaching their first birthdays [not available for any further discounts, including your birthday discount, please]. I want to keep things fresh and make room for the always newly arriving collections that keep coming in. Apparently, I am not smart enough to quit ordering fabric! Lol! We now have in the full line of the new Seuss fabrics, including the flannels. We are still awaiting the Seuss Kaufman Cuddle, which will make lovely backings. And the chickens & wheat fabrics are now in, including chicken wire and some lovely roosters!

Due to popular request, we are now stocking some 100 weight YLI silk threads in basic colors only at this time. With enough interest, I may expand the line at a later date. For now, if you are wanting different colors, I can special order for you.

With our 1st anniversary coming up on August 2nd, Ruth, the Alberta Country Register Editor, did a write up on the shop.

Stop by and pick up your free copy of the July/August 2012 issue.

There will not be a July event, but we are still doing the 5 Minute Cutting Board Classes for those who have a question. And, of course, Sew and Tell is always welcome! Check out FB to see the recent quilts brought by.

For those of you doing group shop hops this summer, if you let me know you are coming, I’ll have a beverage or a snack ready for you to take away, when you are ready to leave. With groups arriving with 10 or more, I’ll do a door prize for one lucky member of your group as well. Give us a call or an e-mail and let us know your travel plans. :o)

And finally ~ we are participating in a Quilt Shop Mystery Bus Tour on Saturday, August 25th!

Your $65 + gst ticket gets you onto the luxury coach, 2 meals, a gift bag and door prizes. You will be picked up in Ponoka at 8:30 a.m. and get chauffeured to 3, yes 3, other quilt shops that day, to arrive back in Ponoka at 8:30 that evening. Seating is limited, so get your tickets early! This should be an amazingly fun outing for everyone taking in the day!

Happy Quilting,

Lynn Burdett

June 2012 Edition

Greetings Fellow Quilters and Fabric Artists:

There has been lots of activities going on at PPQS lately! First of all, we had the opportunity to attend a trade show in Calgary last month and brought the Bloc_Loc system into the shop to demo and sell. This unique system allows an incredibly accurate way to get “perfect” quilt blocks. It is a patent pending system of rulers that allows even less than perfect pieced blocks to be easily squared up. Stop by to check it out for yourself.

June is quilt show month! We were pleased to be at the Wetaskiwin Quilt Show this past weekend. For only having 18 members, they put on an amazing quilt show. Thank you again, ladies! This week, we are off to the Red Deer Quilt Show, to be held on Friday and Saturday, June 8th & 9th. We will be in booth #21. Stop by to say Hi!

Our Demo Day last month was a whole lot of fun; many thanks to all those who came out to hang out with us for the day. We took the Mystery out of Miters and solved some of those baffling Binding Blunders. Our appreciative audience had some of their own requests after the scheduled demos, so we did several more impromptu lessons.

Our Events are over for the summer, but you never know what will happen at PPQS! We had a pattern designer stop by last month to drop off some patterns and ended up treating us and the 4 customers in the store to an “on the spot” trunk show and technique demo. We were thrilled, to say the very least!

We have had people asking for “Canadian” themed fabrics and we are pleased to announce that Northcott’s “Oh Canada” is now in stock! This fabric is featured as Canada’s official QoV [Quilts of Valour] fabric. We have QoV information in the store for those of you who are interested in participating in this very worthwhile project.

Prairie Points News Letter

May 2012 Edition

Greetings Fellow Quilters and Fabric Artists:

It’s May and it finally feels like spring! The May Day trees are starting to leaf out and the tulips are poking through the ground. Happy Spring Everyone!

To celebrate the arrival of the warmer weather, we are happy to tell you that we have many “Spring” themed fabrics now in stock, including “Felicity” by Moda, Northcott’s :”Kaleidoscope”, “Garden Magic” by South Sea Imports and Kate Spain’s “Terrain”. These bright and sunny fabrics will make wonderful Spring throws for your front porch or deck as you enjoy your morning coffee taking in a few rays and listening to the birds sing!

For our event this month, we have decided to do another in shop, Demo Day with yours truly doing the demos on Saturday, the 26th of May. We will do 2 longer sets instead of 4 short sets this time. The first one will be at 11 a.m. and the second at 1 p.m. The two topics that I will be covering will be “Taking the Mystery out of Miters” and “Binding Blunders”. These will be offered at no cost and no pre-registration will be required as we will be doing the demos at the cutting board and the sewing station in the shop. The book that I will be working out of will be Better Homes & Gardens: Complete Guide to Quilting, our favorite “go to” book. I hope you can make it!

New magazines in this month include: Quilt Trends [May/June], McCall’s Quick Quilts [June/July], and The Quilter Magazine [June/July]. We are also pleased to announce that we are now stocking both of Joan Statz’s books and some of her patterns. Joan’s Own Creations: Building & Construction Methods for Applique [revised & updated] and her 2nd Edition of her Free Motion Quilting books are both in stock. Joan’s methods take the stress out of applique and free motion quilting, using your own home sewing machine, to get amazing results. And due to your requests, we have re-stocked Susie C Shore’s: “Who’s Hot” and “Who’s Place”, owl place mat and pot holder patterns. These are just too cute! We also have an amazing selection of apron, pin cushion and purse and wallet patterns along with a great selection of quilt and table runner patterns and many current book titles.

The new notion in this month is the Marti Mitchell’s Magic Mirror, as per your requests, for your “One Block Wonder” quilt previews. We also have in stock the Clover Wonder Clips that everyone is talking about.

Retreat and Quilt Show season is upon us. Take time to check out the shows for inspiration, and book yourself into a retreat for a wonderfully rejuvenating and recharging mini-holiday! Take time to enjoy the sunshine.

Happy Quilting,

Lynn Burdett
